Went Camping in December, Got Cold
The time of year comes when I've been deprived of a night in the woods for too long. And the short days of winter are quite limiting when factoring in drive time to each trail I wish to explore. So I devised a simple plan called "Camping in December" to solve these problems!
The Lower South Fork Skokomish had been on my list for awhile, and being one of the closest (1.5 hour drive, ugh) destinations for hiking/camping, it seemed a reasonable choice. The trails had all the solitude I'd been missing, but the camp had a strange amount of traffic for a December Sunday evening. I'd also forgotten just how uncomfortable my car is for sleeping, especially on a near-freezing night. All to say I didn't sleep much, and that probably played a part in the cold I came down with the next day... But worth it so the people can have a new blog post!

Scenery of the Lower South Fork Skokomish.

Big doug-firs make me happy.

As do licorice fern and moss coated bigleaf maples.

Thankful for waterproof boots, as always.

My abode for the night. Not as far off the beaten path as I would've liked, but did the trick.

Foggy morning wetland walk.

Some forest details, including the rare occurrence of hair ice apparently formed by Exidiopsis effusa fungi on dead wood. Don't ask me how it works.

Had to stop and admire these beautiful alders on my drive home.
